Pentax
The changing world of Videoendoscopy

Pentax is one of the leading manufactureres of video endoscopy. The new innovative K-series offers users a host of specific benefits and sets new standards.
– Exceptionally high resolution is provided by a new custom-made color CCD-chip with 410.000 pixel. To exploit the high number of pixel and high resolution in full, the endoscopic image now fills the entire monitor.
– The new videoprocessor EPK-700 offers a direct connection to all important areas of videoendoscopy: gastroscopy, ERCP and colonoscopy. Despite the exceptionaly high resolution the physician is not limited to diagnosis alone.
The large channel diameters with the same slim insertion tube as before also make the K-Series suitable for therapeutic applications.
– With the same brightness, the new metal halid lamp is much more economical than the classic 300 W Xenon lamp and illuminates the entire field of vision perfectly.
– The dimensions have been greatly reduced. Pentax offers the smallest combination of processor and light source. Weighing a comfortable 13.5 kg the EPK-700 is a welcome relief for users who have been accustomed to much heavier equipment.
Exemplary endoscope ergonomics have always been an important argument in favour of Pentax.

ETHICON ULTRACISION
Ethicon Endo-Surgery stands for improving the quality of life for the surgical patient through innovative partnering with healthcare professionals and the provision of pioneering products, services and training systems.
Today Ethicon Endo-Surgery offers a new range of products:
– Our UltraCision product line combines one of the most advanced technologies, ultrasound, applied to surgical instruments for cutting, dissecting and coagulating vessels and/or tissue.
– The UltraCision product range consists of a generator, footswitch and handpiece with a variety of blades (5 and 10 mm blades such as hooks and shears) specially designed for open and minimally invasive procedures.
Principals of the UltraCision technology:
The instruments are attached to the handpiece which is connected to the generator. The ultrasonic system is situated inside the handpiece and transforms the electric energy into mechanical movement producing in this way the longitudinal vibrations of the blades at 55,5 Kilohertz cycles per second. The movement of the blades causes the collagen molecules to vibrate inside the tissue thus forming a coagulum due to their denaturalisation. Hence, at no point in time current is flowing through the patient ultimately increasing the safety during the procedure.

FUJINON - EUROPEAN PREMIERE - TRANSENDOSCOPIC
ULTRASOUND SYSTEM WITH AN ULTRASOUND HEAD  OF 7.5 MHZ
Some time ago we presented our FUJINON ultrasound system SP-701 which enables transendoscopic ultrasound by different mini probes (from 2.0 mm to 2.6 mm external diameter) in the frequency range from 12 to 20 MHz.
The probes can be used without great effort with almost all endoscopes for the lower and the upper alimentary tract independent of the manufacturer.
So far the mini probes could not be seen as competition to an ultrasound endoscope because a frequency of 7.5 MHz with the corresponding invading depth was not available as mini probe. But FUJINON could also manage this problem by a simple trick, the so-called "pre-loading".
During the well visited training "Endoskopie des Internisten" in Wiesbaden on 1 8th and 1 gth April 1998, the Hospital "Horst-Schmidt-Klinikum" could demonstrate the successful use of a FUJINON 7.5 MHz-ultrasound probe during a live examination.
This live examination was transmitted to the lecture-hall and was one of the highlights of this event.
During this examination single organs and the pancreatic duct coúld be seen very well. Soon you will surely get further information about other fields of application of the new FUJINON ultrasound probe. As the 7.5 MHz ultrasound head does not fit through the working channel of an endoscope but the shaft, it is necessary to do a "pre-loading" before use: the doctor has to take the probe with the ultrasound head from distal through the working channel to the forceps-valve and to put on the connection piece to the so-called "translator".
When introducing the endoscope, the ultrasound head is placed in front of the optics and can be seen in the image but the examiner has still quite a good view and can orientate himself at any time. If the probe should be used with a balloon, a catheter is used for filling in the balloon. By this naturally the external diameter of the transendoscopic probe is enlarged and therefore also the demands on the inner diameter of the working channel are higher which should have in this case at least 3.2 mm (or more for a better suction).
In the following please find some techriical data of the new FUJINON ultrasound probe:
External diameter ultrasound head: 7.3 mm
Working length: 1700 mm, 1900 mm and 2200 mm
The Hospital "Horst-Schmidt-Kliniken" in Wiesbaden can be contacted as reference hospital for medical questions.
