The medieval town, beating heart of Castiglione in Teverina, dates back to the Xlll century. In the middle ages, it was governed by The Monaldeschi, Dukes of Orvieto, who built a castle on the top of a hill settled above the Tiber Vafley, the river which flows quietly at its feet, in a valley rich in vineyards and olive groves.

The church dedicated to saints Philip and James, was built in 1630 in baroque style. Inside you can admire precious paintings and sculpures dating back to XV and XVI century, among which: the "Madonna della Cintola" by an anonymous Master of Castiglione, the baptistery in stone, and the wooden image of Christ Crucified adored by the believers as the Patron Saint of the vfflage.

The ancient fortress of the Monaldeschi was built in the XIV century with the rubble of the Castle of Paterno destroyed by Cerardo di Corrado Monaldeschi. The building you can admire in Piazza Maggiore has undergone a great transformation during centuries, but its architectural structures still shows its original earthworks.

The "Burgh" of Sermugnano has Etruscan origin attested by a rich necropolis. According to a local tradition, its name derives from "Herry Mugnen" (Ser Mugnen) a mercenary soldier. In order to protect the lands of the Monaldeschi, he built a stronghold whose ruins are stia visible at the top of the village. The Church of Saint Silvester has mediaeval origins, but it was entirely restaured inl879. Inside, a painting of the XVI century showing Saint Silvester and the Virgin Mary.

The ancient hamlet of Vaiano was situated, in Roman times, along one of the most imporant road to Rome in Italy. Along that road, in the XI century, there was a Benedictine monastery which assisted pilgrims travelling to and from Rome.
